George Hawkins Shares Insight on DC Water
by Anna Foden, LEED AP, Chapter Services Coordinator
George Hawkins, general manager of the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) and former Administrator of the DC Department of the Environment, wowed the audience at the Chapter's October 20 Happy Hour. The event took place at the Knoll Showroom on K Street, NW. George played a key role in development of the Green Building Act of 2006, as well as various home weatherization programs for families in need. He is a native of Cleveland, OH, and shared his life-changing experience of seeing the river, notoriously polluted by various toxins, catch fire. George Hawkins leads a billion-dollar organization which is instrumental in delivering clean water to District residents. He described how recent improvements at the Blue Plains treatment plant are making significant contributions to improving water quality in the Chesapeake Bay.
The event was a joint program of the NCR chapter and its Emerging Professionals. Mr. Hawkins' presentation was preceded by a networking reception from 6-7 pm.
