Strawbales, Wetlands and Composting Toilets: A Green Home in Berkeley County- Jeff Feldman, green homeowner turned green building consultant, will be speaking about the green home he and his wife, Kristin, built in Berkeley County, WV. The home is a passive solar, post and beam-framed, strawbale-SIP hybrid structure. It features a masonry heater, composting toilets, a graywater wetland treatment system, wheatboard kitchen cabinetry, and a recycled paper kitchen countertop along with several other green elements. Jeff will highlight the green considerations that drove their building decisions, present images and stories from the construction process, share samples of some of the green materials used in the home, and answer questions about the learnings that occurred along the way. The Design of the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum: A LEED NC Platinum Project- Nathan Webb LEED AP, AIA will be discussing the proposed LEED Platinum Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum in the context of LEED for New Construction and the Integrated Design Process. Nathan Webb is a project architect at Reader and Swartz architects in Winchester, Virginia where he is the Associate in charge of Sustainable Design. The Discovery Museum is slated to be a LEED Platinum project in partnership with Virginia Tech University. This building will exhibit extensive and intensive green roofs, a large scale rainwater collection system, geothermal heating and cooling, radiant cooling, photovoltaics, and a permiable parking "quilt" to name a few of the systems. This discussion will focus on the five categories of the LEED NC and the design solutions the Discovery Museum will incorporate to achieve a LEED NC Platinum rating. This program will include light refreshments provided by Good Natured Restaurant of Martinsburg, West Virginia.
